Principal Financial Group is Hiring an Associate Actuary Near Des Moines, IA

What You'll Do

We’re looking for an Associate Actuary to join our Variable Annuity team! In this role, you will lead a small team responsible for the pricing of our traditional variable annuities and registered index-linked annuities. The ability to direct and provide analytical leadership as appropriate, as well as promote the effective use of actuarial techniques, tools, and methodologies in decision making is important. There may be opportunities to lead or participate on business unit or cross-company project teams.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Lead all aspects of the team’s completion of regular pricing analysis, and lead discussions with business partners to make decisions on variable annuity rate setting.
  • Lead annual assumption review for the key assumptions that drive our business results.
  • Coordinate quarterly Value of New Business calculations and communicate results to business partners.
  • Partner with our product management team and distribution on the evaluation of product ideas, distribution partnerships, and other topics.
  • Provide direction and leadership to direct reports on the day to day functions of their jobs.

Who You Are
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required
  • A Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, or global equivalent, or Enrolled Actuary plus 6-8 years actuarial experience required
  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, the Actuarial Standards of Practice promulgated by the Actuarial Standards Board, and the Code of Professional Conduct of the AAA and the SoA is required
  • Maintain continuing education requirements as specified by the SOA or AAA
  • Good communication skills and knowledge of Excel, Office, or similar PC software packages, or ability to learn, are preferred
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$123000 - $167000 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments

This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
